(01) North Star Toys

A family business making classic wooden push and pull toys, simple wooden animal figures, and more since 1979. Made from American hardwoods and using recycled materials where possible, North Star Toys’ sustainable toy collection comes unpainted to show off the natural beauty of the wood itself. I personally fell in love with some of the red cedarwood toys they offer — just look at that alluring reddish-rosy tone!

(02) Majestic Elf Cat

Majestic Elf Cat makes laser cut wooden puzzles in the shape of U.S. states — true-to-proportion and down-to-detail. Thin and light sheets of wood — fashioned with borderlines as accurate as a map. Even the county lines and their names are laser-etched in!

One more fun tidbit — the brand name Majestic Elf Cat was inspired by a sweet’n’loving long haired Farmington, NM tabby cat. It’s great to know kitties and toy brands in the heated American Southwest stay friends with Germanic-Nordic forest folklore.

(03) Enchanted Country Barn

A “down to desert” woodshop from near the border between Old and New Mexico — located in the quaint and arid location of Silver City. Simple handmade woodcraft puzzles and figurines, made with pine wood and love from the family farm.

A New Mexico Toy Making Time Capsule

  • Steve Mattern Design — Some time before 2024, Steve Mattern Design made design-centric laser-cut puzzles and DIY kits exclusively from birch plywood — beautiful and curious, useful and informative. Things fell into place like clockwork, when a classically trained New Mexico mechanical engineer and architect fell in love with wood. Steve Mattern Design focused efforts on digital toy design fabrication followed by hands-on woodcraft. We can only wonder what kind of projects the “currently not selling” Steve Mattern Design is thinking up now!
