(03) Arizona Mantel Works

Arizona Mantel Works makes classically handcrafted wooden toy vehicles and figurines from poplar and birch woods. Hand held haughty — the wheeled cars, planes, and trains measure from 6 to 9 inches long. One unusual reason to take a peak? The Arizona Mantel Works wooden rattle wagon pull toy is equipped with square wheels to cause a racket.

Although the toy parts are pieced together with plain wood, a wood-burning tool is used to incise details like a custom number. Glues, lacquers, and mineral-oils are applied to keep finish these long-lasting toys.

An Arizona Toy Making Time Capsule

  • Lily & River — During the climbing toy craze of 2020, Lily & River was Arizona’s hottest brand for wooden climbing toys and other child-sized acrobatic equipment. When people across the nation found out about Lily & River — previously made in Phoenix, AZ — they simply fell in love with Lily & River. At that time, it was one of my favorites, too — with aesthetic beauty and intuitive design at large-scale — all while promoting holistic development of your child’s body, mind, and soul. I’m quite perplexed to learn Lily & River is no longer in business, but I’m glad to know some of their pikler triangles, ladders, and slides remain in stock at random retailers across the internet.
  • Tiny Tikes Play — Until the year 2022, Tiny Tikes Play was home to Arizona’s most meteorologically accurate handcrafted rainbow stacker — because it commingled clouds and lightning bolts. Tiny Tikes Play fashioned premium wood into playful shapes, and added tutti-frutti assortments of delicious colors — for a fair weather playscape of open-ended, early learning, and sensory play toys.
  • Dear Baby Kay — For the several years following 2017, the Dear Baby Kay brand made baby keepsakes with refined taste — custom engraved with your baby’s name — for families to keep track of important milestones. Their aesthetic focused on simplicity and purity, to keep the mother-child bond extra special.
  • JoePaul’s Crafts — Until the year 2023, crafty Arizona families looked to JoePaul’s collection of 3D wood craft parts made from basswood, pine, and premium medium-density fiberboard (MDF) to purchase a letter to paint. It was ABC, from bulky letters to wood carving kits — but nowadays, only a few of JoePaul’s letters remain available for sale on Amazon.
